  1. Just found this blog and automatically subscribed after a quick glance. The wife got me a Q9c over the holidays. I like it, but I'm wondering what else I can do with it. Going back to re-read your posts and am looking forward to reading more from you!

  2. Thanks for the comment! I've been posting the best tips I've found, but you'll also probably find the links in the sidebar useful as well. EverythingQ has been invaluable when running into an issue or trying to figure out how to do something. Hope you like your Q9C as much as I do mine!

  3. Any info on how to get your email to go to your SD card. Needs to be simplified. Using Q9c, WM6.

    thanks

  4. Unfortunately I don't know of any way to get your email to save to the SD card. The same goes for text messages. I believe some people on the EverythingQ forums were discussing it and nobody had found a solution the last time I checked.

  7. Will the spectec wifi microsd card work with Windows Mobile 6.1 on the Q9c?

Getting a Q9c this week and would really like to add wifi.

    Thanks!

  8. @Adventure Mom, I can answer this one with certainty. I should note the Q9C uses the MiniSD format, not MicroSD (I believe some of the other versions like the Q9M may use MicroSD). I have the Q9C on Sprint with Windows Mobile 6.1 and I got the Spectec MiniSD Wifi card, and installed the driver off the Spectec website. After doing that the card has been working flawlessly.

Also please note that Spectec has two flavors of that card, though both have the same version number (SDW-822). One is a "regular version" and one is a "Motorola version" of the same card. I ordered the Motorola version for an extra $10 just to be safe, but the 3rd party I bought it from accidentally sent me the regular version so I tried it out and it worked! I followed up with Spectec and they indicated the "Motorola version" label applied to the older regular Q because it didn't provide enough power for the regular version to work. In the newer Q9s, apparently they provide enough power for either version to work. So save yourself $10 bucks and get the regular version if you have a Q9C!

  9. Niraj,

Thank you for the information! How have you found surfing on the motorola Q9c? Is the screen size challenging? Have you used skype with it?

Have you heard any feedback from Verizon users that confirm there are no additional charges/fees added when using Spectec's wifi card?

    Thanks!

  10. AdventureMom, the screen size can ocassionally be a bit challenging. However, I split up my browsing usage based on what I'm doing.

For text heavy sites the built-in IE does a pretty good job. For sites where there's more media or richer interfaces, the free Skyfire web browser is fantastic as it acts like Safari on the iPhone, showing a full desktop-style version of a webpage and letting you zoom into different parts. Skyfire just opened their doors to everyone after a long testing period, and I've been meaning to post about it for some time now. But it's not quite as good at text-heavy sites. Between the two browsers I can do just about anything.

I have installed Skype but haven't gotten the chance to use it yet. Also I have not heard much about the Verizon Q9C, though I imagine it's nearly identical to the Sprint one. You should definitely not incur fees...this happens if you try to tether your phone to a laptop and start using way more data than you would with just the phone. Then they try to charge you for that. In the case of the Wifi card, you're actually doing the opposite...you're getting data/internet without using the Verizon network (you're using whatever wifi service you're connected to) so they wouldn't be aware of that.

There were some people that mentioned concerns about getting charged for data because they don't have data plans, and how to make sure that doesn't happen when using wifi.

  11. Niraj,

Skyfire looks like a great app! My Motorola Q is arriving in two days. I will be updating to Windows Mobile 6.1 and ordering a Spectec wifi card.

Thank you for the suggestions! It has helped to lessen some of my iPhone envy ;-)

FYI - In my surfing I did come across a rumor of a newer mini sd wifi card that would allow memory storage. Was unable to find any further info..

  12. Niraj,

I only see a driver for WM6.0 on the Spectec site, not for WM6.1.

Was the 6.0 driver the one you used for the SDW-822?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Gary, yes, I believe I have used the card since I updated to WinMo 6.1, while still using the 6.0 driver.

    Specifically, I picked this driver:
    SDW-820/822, DRIVER, CAB, WM6.0, 10.07.01, 2007/10/19

    from this page:
    http://www.spectec.com.tw/Download.htm#wlan

Let me know if it works for you as well.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

  15. I cant figure out how to delete my internet browsing history permanently. I ahve already tried deleting temp files and cache as well as history. However, when I hit my back button, my browsing history is still there. I would love to figure out how to get rid of this.

  16. Cindi, the following steps work for me...hopefully they work for you as well:

    1) In PIE, go to Menu->Tools->Options and select Memory.

    2) On Temporary Files and History, hit clear and make sure the value updates to 0 bytes (this can take a while if you have a lot)

    3) When both are cleared to 0 bytes, hit Done twice so you're back on the webpage you were at.

    4) Hit end to hide the browser.

    5) Hold the home button down to bring up the Quick List, and select the Task Manager.

    6) In the task manager, either end the browser task specifically, or if you're not sure just end all tasks.

    7) The next time you open your browser, it should open to your homepage. Your browser history should be empty.

Hopefully that works for you as well!

  18. Ok, kind of a slow-to-use, fast-adopter... have had a couple of generations of moto-q and have always wished I'd be able to have a wifi-enabled phone with which I could VOIP (like when I'm in a hotel room or a WIFI hotspot CAFE in Seoul, for example)... Does this card give the q9c this capability? Is it easy to use? Does anybody have experience using it like this and, can they expound on it? By all means, write a book on it (but post here)... Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  19. @peter: I can't speak much to that kind of use (VOIP) because I haven't tried it myself. However, the Wifi works great using this card, so I don't see why something like the Spectec card combined with software like Skype for Windows Mobile 2.5 Beta couldn't do what you're asking for.

As long as you can find a Windows Mobile application that supports the use of WiFi, you shouldn't have a problem since Windows Mobile handles the wireless internet connection. Just be careful since some apps are meant only for use while you're on a data network and may not work as expected on WiFi.

  20. hay i have a moto q9c what is a spc check

  21. @mattheww, it's been years since I've used the device so I can't say with complete certainty, but a quick search yielded this post which indicates it is your MSL if you're on Sprint (as mentioned in the link, you can get the MSL from cust service if you don't have it) or "000000" if you're on Verizon. Basically it's a security code that lets you access more advanced settings. Hope that helps!
